Comparison of neoclassical predictions with measured flows and evaluation of a poloidal impurity density asymmetry

چکیده
The study and prediction of velocities in the pedestal region of Alcator CMod are important for understanding plasma confinement and transport. In this study we examine the simplified neoclassical predictions for impurity flows using equations developed for plasmas with background ions in the Pfirsch-Schlüter (high collisionality) and banana (low collisionality) regimes. B flow profiles for H-mode plasmas are acquired using the charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy diagnostic on Alcator C-Mod and are compared with calculated profiles for the region just inside the last closed flux surface. Reasonable agreement is found between the predictions from the Pfirsch-Schlüter regime formalism and the measured poloidal velocities for the steep gradient region of the H-mode pedestals regardless of the collisionality of the plasma. The agreement is poorer between the neoclassical predictions and measured velocity profiles using the banana regime formalism. Additionally, comparisons of measured velocities from the lowand high-field sides of the plasma lead us to infer the strong possibility of a poloidal asymmetry in the B density. This asymmetry can be a factor of 2–3 for the region of the steepest gradients, with the density at the high-field side being larger. The magnitude of the density asymmetry is found to be correlated with the magnitude of the poloidal velocity at the low-field side of the plasma.

Indirect measurement of poloidal rotation using inboard–outboard asymmetry of toroidal rotation and comparison with neoclassical predictions
An alternative experimental spectroscopic measurement of poloidal plasma rotation in toroidally confined plasmas is proven effective in the TCV tokamak. Charge exchange recombination measurements of the toroidal rotation profile over the full mid-plane plasma diameter are used to infer the complete bi-dimensional flow structure of the intrinsic C6+ impurity, which includes its poloidal componen...
متن کاملCalculation of impurity poloidal rotation from measured poloidal asymmetries in the toroidal rotation of a tokamak plasma.
To improve poloidal rotation measurement capabilities on the DIII-D tokamak, new chords for the charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CER) diagnostic have been installed. CER is a common method for measuring impurity rotation in tokamak plasmas. These new chords make measurements on the high-field side of the plasma. They are designed so that they can measure toroidal rotation without the...
متن کاملEdge Plasma Phenomena in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak measured by High Resolution X-Ray Imaging Diagnostics
In this thesis high resolution soft x-ray measurements from the Alcator C-Mod plasma edge are presented for a variety of different plasma conditions. These measurements provide radial profiles of the soft x-ray emissivity with 1.5 mm resolution or better, and temporal resolution down to 12 μs. These profiles show a distinct and very narrow pedestal shape in H-mode, indicative of the H-mode tran...
متن کاملNeoclassical theory of pedestal flows and comparison with Alcator C-Mod measurements
Neoclassical implications of the strong radial electric field, inherently present in an H-mode tokamak pedestal, are considered. The main ion poloidal flow in the pedestal is predicted to be reduced in magnitude, or even reversed, compared with its core counterpart. The resulting change in the neoclassical formula for the impurity flow is shown to result in improved agreement with boron measure...
متن کاملNeoclassical calculation of poloidal rotation and poloidal density asymmetries in tokamaks
A previous model for the calculation of poloidal velocities and poloidal density asymmetries in the core of a tokamak plasma is refined and extended by the inclusion of terms which are important for the calculation of these quantities in the plasma edge. Agreement of predictions of the model with experiment is demonstrated. The effects of edge pressure gradient, collisionality, neutral density ...
